Nothing But the Best for the Roof Over Your Head

Living in Middle Tennessee means that we get our fair share of storms that bring with them plenty of rain, hail and high winds. Add to that the threat of tornadoes, and you want to be sure the roof over your head keeps your family–and all the things you hold dear–safe and sound! When it comes to the roof over your head, you want to make sure it is done right once so that you never have to do it again!

We are going to discuss some of the common things you may encounter with your roof and give you some advice that may help you discern whether or not it is time for a roof upgrade.

Streaking If you see black lines on your roof that look like it could be damage, it is likely a build-up of algae called “streaking”. Although it looks black, it is actually blue-green algae that starts in one area of your roof and spreads. It is caused by moisture and a lack of sun on your roof. Although it is unsightly, it does not mean your roof is damaged.

The roofing products that we recommend as replacement shingles are Scotchgard protected and are guaranteed to NEVER streak. They contain copper granules that repel the growth of algae. If you want to learn more about our streak-free roofs, get in touch with us!

Curling or Buckling As roofing shingles age, they begin to curl and buckle. Shingles that are curling or buckling are vulnerable during a windstorm. High winds can blow shingles off your roof, leaving your home exposed to water damage.

Granule Loss The granules that are found on shingles are a major component of their structure, specifically adding to the weatherproofing qualities of the shingles. Dents and dings from hailstorms can cause the granules to become loose and slide off your roof. Once the granules wash away, you are left with a fiberglass mat which, when exposed, can decay more quickly due to the effects of UV rays. If the pan or runoff areas at the end of your gutter downspouts have a little pile of granule build up, it may be time to have a professional give you an opinion about the state of your roof.

Missing Shingles Your roof is what stands between you and the elements. Missing shingles give water an open pathway to find its way into your home and cause a little chaos. If you are missing just a couple of shingles, you should have them replaced. If you are missing more than a couple of shingles, it may be time for a roof replacement.

Underlayment The underlayment (the material under the shingles) plays a large role in home protection. The quality of underlayment used can vary greatly depending on the roofer. When it comes to your roof, you want to be sure your roofer applies a very good synthetic barrier. This gives you heavy ice and water protection. When you combine that with quality shingles, you will never have to replace your roof again.

Remodel 615 only uses synthetic underlayment. Synthetic underlayment can be applied to a roof and left on the home for up to 60 days without shingles and remain watertight. It’s a water barrier.
